Britain will end up rejoining the single market and customs union - and possibly the EU - on worse terms than than we had before we left. Today’s projections are just the latest to demonstrate that we can’t afford not to.

“War” (Edwin Starr) and “Cloud Nine” were also his.

What a legacy.

Nearing the end of Liberty's Dawn: A People's History of the Industrial Revolution by @EmmaGriffinHist@twitter.com.

Enlightening, and an object lesson in how close reading of a relatively neglected class of archival sources can yield new insights.

The habit of MPs to leave in disgrace but write a little letter about their best bits is wild. Imagine if we all did it. ‘So sorry I got drunk at the office do and did a wee in that pot plant - I *know* HR have to sack me. But remember the project I managed in 2007. Nailed that.’

It feels to me that recently Gabriel Pogrund, Harry Yorke, Pippa Crerar, Paul Brand and others like them have given a reminder of what consequential political reporting looks like.

More of this sort of thing, less transcribing what ‘sources close to’ a Tory minister have said.

Of course as @mattgreencomedy@twitter.com pointed out the other day, ‘Remember: it’s not corruption, if it’s Britain’.

I don’t get this.

What’s the complaint? That the lobbying was done through the filmmakers’ social contacts, rather than through campaigns by the studios’ PR departments? theguardian.com/film/2023/jan/

On a couple of occasions recently, I’ve seen attempts by people I respect to defend the use of the term ‘woke’ as a useful descriptor of a set of beliefs.

Given that it is now really only used pejoratively by those on the right, this is helpful history. naacpldf.org/woke-black-bad/

No better monument to this era than a HS rail link from London to the north that doesn’t quite reach central London & doesn’t quite reach intended bits of the north either imho. Well done everyone.

In the latest @kermodeandmayo@twitter.com podcast a Chat GPT / AI bot wrote one of their letters and both of them couldn’t tell that it wasn’t real until after they were told. Unsettling.

Well they are *quite* accessible, Hermes.

For example I managed to walk down the driveway and open the front door not two hours ago.
